This beautiful old Bluestone Flour Mill now is showing the test of time. Although still solid, it is starting to crumble.
I have always admired this beautiful building but never thought I would have the opportunity to photograph it. Let alone to capture it under a magnificent aurora!!
And what a night that was. One of the best Aurora Australis I have seen in years!
After seeing this magnificent building, I did a little delving into the history books.
Over 280 flour mills existed in Victoria at some stage. 32 of these were water powered. Most ceased operating within a couple of decades of their commencement.
In 1900 there were 197 mills operating in Victorian and by 1940 there were 102, partly due to the Flour Mill Rehabilitation Scheme, under which the main members of the Flour Miller’s council bought up small mills, destroyed the machinery and sold off the buildings again, sometimes with covenants that they could no longer produce flour. By 1987 only 37 mills were operating, and this reduced to 8 in 1990 (Source: Gary Vines, Historical Archaeologist , Biosis Pty Ltd).
